Vascular Dilaters
Vascular dilators also known as vasodilators, substances that cause the blood vessels to widen or dilate. By promoting the relaxation and expansion of blood vessels, they increase and reduce resistance to blood flow within the vessels. There are two types of peripherl vasodilators endogenous and exogenous.
- Endogenous Vasodilators: These substances are present naturally within the body that can cause blood vessels to dilate. Some important examples include:
- Nitric oxide (NO): It is a potent vasodilator that release by the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels. Nitric oxide helps regulate vascular tone and promotes the relaxation of smooth muscles in blood vessel walls.
- Prostacyclin (PGI2): Produce by endothelial cells, prostacyclin has vasodilatory effects and also inhibits platelet aggregation.
- Adenosine: It is a metabolic byproduct that release during cellular activities and can cause vasodilation in response to tissue oxygen demand.
- Exogenous Vasodilators: These are medications or substances are administer from external sources to induce vasodilation. These are useful for various medical purposes, such as treating high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), heart failure, and other cardiovascular conditions. Some commonly used exogenous vasodilators include:
- Nitroglycerin: Often used to relieve angina, nitroglycerin is a potent vasodilator that primarily acts by releasing nitric oxide, which relaxes the smooth muscles in blood vessel walls.
- Calcium channel blockers: These medications block the entry of calcium into smooth muscle cells, leading to relaxation and dilation of blood vessels.
- Alpha blockers: They work by blocking alpha-adrenergic receptors, resulting in relaxation of the smooth muscles in blood vessels.
- Hydralazine: This medication is useful to treat high blood pressure by directly relaxing arterial smooth muscles.
It’s important to note that the use of vasodilators should be under the supervision and prescription of a healthcare professional, as they can have systemic effects on blood pressure and other physiological processes.
